Rowing

Rowing

Rowing is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat.

Rowing Australia runs a Para-Rowing Program that gives people with a disability the chance to be active on the water, get involved in a fun and friendly club environment, and participate in a variety of competitions from club regattas through state and national championships to world championships and Paralympic Games.

Local Rowing Opportunities

If you're new to rowing, the best place to start is with a Learn to Row program. Learn to Row programs are designed to teach those who have never rowed the basic skills involved with rowing. After completion participants may choose to take up sport further by becoming a member of an affiliated club and registering as a competitor with Rowing ACT.

Most rowing clubs in Canberra have a Learn to Row program. You can find out details for each club by clicking here.  Or call Rowing ACT on 0406 376 666.

Capital Lakes Rowing Club runs a para-rowing program that caters for athletes with vision, physical and intellectual impairment. If you have not rowed before they will take you through a Learn to Row program and then support you to continue rowing in an organised supervised program, generally one day per week.

Rowers are supervised at all times and they encourage carers or support people to also become involved in the rowing program.  Further information can be obtained by contacting their Learn to Row Coordinator by email: capitallakes@gmail.com.
